Week notes, week 1338 / 2026-09-13

The main highlight of this week was being back home with family. I cherish such moments; there's a bunch of warmth to be around dear people and the air out there is so clean... in ways that the big city can, could never replicate. Yet every good thing comes to an end, and, alas, I would need to be back in office in the coming weeks.

(Technical and unrelated aside. If it is true "every good thing comes to an end", is it also true that every bad thing comes to an end? If we take the sense that every good thing is mortal, well, on this mortal plane of existence, isn't every bad thing just as mortal? Or, if we take the sense of a zero-sum game, then every bad thing is good for someone else, so then it surely has to end for them! Even in a more apocalyptic sense that the whole world is going to become worse, we could see that every bad thing is still "better" than some worst thing that would follow it, so again, every bad thing would end. Anyway, I digress.)

Some highlights:

• Walks in nature, eating wild apples and cornel fruits, breathing in some air untouched by car exhausts, basking in a silence so superb that you can actually hear cars from the next mountaintop over. Why-oh-why did I go back to the city after that
• Grandma cooks really well. My feeble attempts are, well, feeble. We were regaled with ratatouille, tomato-and-bacon soups, petatnik / regional hashbrown-like potato pancakes, and whatnot more. And now it's back to bland muesli prepared hastily before rushing to the office. Followed by tortillas, that taste nothing like real tortillas, by the office for lunch. And, can't forget the classics, the hastily-assembled sandwich/toast/spread variation for dinner.
• Vacation's over, back to work with me. Positively impressed by the progress done in my absence, it's good to see so many things cross from plan to reality.
• Got to experiment a bunch with IPv6 and setting up SNAT/DNAT with nftables! We aren't fully certain if we will use any of that, but it is very useful for deciding how to set our networking in the future.
• Participated in the Hack&Craft event with Project:World! 🎉 Spent most of the three hours understanding my old code, as last I touched it was around February/March.

Reading, games, and other media consumption

• Using the railway network as a flatbed scanner was a cool read with cool visuals to boot. Found via kottke, via Mastodon, aka the Fediverse :glasses:
• Joel blogged about origami and now I'm slightly jealous of his skill at bending paper. Really nice models over there! A couple with tutorials linked!
• Why are short videos bad for learning? was nice for reflection... couldn't fully connect to the "short videos are more convincing" premise, but "shorter videos skip the learning" and "longer works give you more context" seem valid.
• Caught up to a bunch of videos from favorite video channels. One can miss so much while away from home!
• The Darths and Droids saga is about to end. 🥲 Now I need to find something else to look forward to!
